When most people think of revolutions they think of massive wars. Little do they know, one individual can cause a revolution. In Fahrenheit 451 and The Revolution by The Beatles, individuals struggle to revolt against society, but it pays off in the end. Montag, in Fahrenheit 451, takes it upon himself to force an evolutional change on his society. In the song The Revolution, The Beatles take a look at the government and question whether the alternatives they propose are truly better than what they are criticizing. Montag also questions the motives of his government and why they consist of creating this unpleasant dystopia. In Fahrenheit 451 Montag shows his first thoughts of rebellion when Clarisse asks him “ Do you ever read any of the books that you burn? ” (Pg. 8). Although he is curious about the information that these books hold, Montag reiterates to Clarisse that any interaction with books is against the law. Even though she may not know exactly what it is Clarisse picks up on Montag’s curiosity and tells him “ You’re not like the others. ” (Pg. 23). Clarisse may not quite understand what’s going through Montag’s mind, but she knows that he’s not like the other firefighters that burn books with no sort of inquisitiveness. Knowing that Montag is different from his peers, Clarisse feels comfort and assurance that Montag can make a change that will affect not only his life but the lives of hundreds. In Fahrenheit 451 Montag displays his first action to revolt against the government when he “ Plunged the book under his arm” (37) in the women’s house knowing that the possession of this book could lead to his incarceration. Although Montag knew that he was breaking the law, he let curiosity get the best of him. Montag also showed action’s to revolt when Faber said to him “ If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you’ll never learn. “(104). At this moment Montag makes debatably the most life changing decision escape from his life and begin a fresh start. Although Montag may not realize it his actions would soon change his unpleasant dystopia into a pleasant utopia. In the song The Revolution by The Beatles John Lennon speaks about the hardships of revolutions. John Lennon points at the people that say they want change by saying “ You ain’t going to make it with anyone” implying that want change but aren’t willing to work for it. In Fahrenheit 451 Montag proves himself worthy of making a change by standing up to Captain Beatty. John Lennon also says “ You better free you mind instead” to the people that aren’t willing to work for change because works without actions are pointless. Montag does the exact opposite in Fahrenheit 451 by breaking the law and becoming more acquainted with books. In Fahrenheit 451 and The Revolution by The Beatles revolution is achieved by constant struggle and will power. Although Ray Bradbury and John Lennon’s motives may have differed, the outcome in The Revolution and Fahrenheit 451 were the same. Most people think that revolution is achieved by war but as Ray Bradbury and John Lennon proved, any one person can do anything they put their minds to.
